Shakespeare is an important symbol of the Western influence on the development of modern theatre in East Asia. Within the history of modern Japanese theatre, Kawakami Otojirō’s adaptation of Othello, which incorporated Taiwan into the setting of the play, appears to hold two interconnected meanings for Taiwan today: “Shakespeare as a representation of Western-style theatre and modernization,” and “Kawakami’s adaptation of Othello as a representation of the colonial imperial gaze.” The overlap between these two meanings reveals the contrasting, intertwined, and complex relationship between colonialism and modernity in Taiwan.

To re-examine the historical significance behind this theatrical text and critically reconsider the imperial consciousness embedded within it, the video work presented in this project takes the form of staged readings followed by group discussions. A number of Taiwanese theatre practitioners were invited to read and discuss the text together, reflecting on and comparing Shakespeare’s original work, Kawakami’s adaptation, and the history of the prewar Japanese colonial empire.

The footage recorded during these staged readings subsequently became an important source of visual material for Chen Fei-Hao’s video installation. In Japan, an online staged reading and lecture were also organized to present perspectives from contemporary Japanese theatre.
